How to win friends and influence people book review

The book is divided into 4 parts. Each containing a powerful message to follow from.

PART ONE: HOW TO HANDEL PEOPLE

The central principle is that by modifying your own actions, you will influence the behaviour of others. It teaches you how to better understand people, become more likeable, strengthens relationships, persuades others, and influence action through leadership. The writer is of the view that everyone desires to feel important and desired.

Criticizing others is not only pointless, but it also puts them on the defensive, hurts their ego, and may even cause anger. Rather than judging, strive to comprehend why people behave the way they do. People want to do things because it gives them pleasure, and one of the deepest human desires is to be loved or to feel significant. People will love you if you can meet the need.

Part Two: Six ways to make people like you

The writer gave a list of 6 ways which can convince people to like you. That is:

1) Become genuinely interested in other people.

2) Smile.

3) A person’s name is to that person the sweetest and most important sound in any language.

4) Be a good listener.

5) Talk in terms of the other person’s interests.

6) Make the other person feel important – and do it sincerely.

The central theme of this book is to always see things from the perspective of someone other than yourself. Carnegie illustrates his points with tales and examples from English rulers, Civil War generals, and other notable figures such as Franklin and Teddy Roosevelt.

Part Three: Twelve ways to win people to your way of thinking

This part deals with twelve ways that can help you to win the heart of people. The writer has listed the ways as below:

  1. The only way to get the best of an argument is to avoid it.
  2. Show respect for the other person’s opinions. Never say, “You’re wrong.”
  3. If you are wrong, admit it quickly and emphatically.
  4. Begin in a friendly way.
  5.  Get the other person saying “yes, yes” immediately.
  6. Let the other person do a great deal of the talking.
  7.  Let the other person feel that the idea is his or hers.
  8.  Try honestly to see things from the other person’s point of view.
  9. Be sympathetic with the other person’s ideas and desires.
  10. Appeal to the nobler motives.
  11. The Movies Do It. TV Does It. Why Don’t You Do It?
  12. Throwdown a challenge.

So, the theme idea of this part is when you’re trying to persuade others to change their mind, stop bringing up topics about which you disagree right away. Instead, focus on topics that you agree with and focus on them. The point is to tell them that you share similar goals and only differ about how to achieve them, and to do so, say “yes” as soon as possible, and above all, stop making them say “no.”

Part Four — Be a leader: how to change people without living offensively or arousing resentment

These values are critical when it comes to transforming perceptions and behaviour: Be sincere; focus on the other person’s benefits; know what you want the other person to do; be empathetic, and write your request in a way that demonstrates what the other person can gain from doing so. You may not always get a positive response, but you are more likely to alter people’s perceptions and behaviours this way which is an advantage.
