3 Effective Tips on How To Modify Behavior

So the question arises that why we behave the way we do?

The answer is that our behavior is the result of the circumstances and events happening around us. Usually, our behavior is conditioned. The consequence of that particular behavior sets the base if it will be repeated in the future or not. Although there are many techniques for today we will go with ABC model. As it is one of the most effective techniques to change the behavior.

The ABC model stands for Attitude, Behavior, and Consequence. It is a tool that helps to identify the reasons behind those habits and the effect of those habits on us. It helps people to evaluate the behavior they want to alter.

Our behaviors are the result of the events happening in our present. One of the most important types of conditioning is classical conditioning. Because of it, your behavior gets conditioned. For example, your father punishes you for not studying. Because you are afraid to get punished. Now, whenever you listen to the horn of your father’s car you start studying. Later on, whenever you hear the same horn will you start studying. Even if it is not your father you start to study.
Another very interesting method of conditioning the behavior is operant conditioning.
In this conditioning, you are rewarded once you show the desired behavior. For example, your mother appraises you when you clean your room and give you money. This will boost the way you behave.

To conclude, all the behaviors are maintained using reinforcements. You can use these methods to diminish undesirable behaviors

Punishments change the result of undesirable behavior. There are 2 types of punishments, positive punishments, and negative punishments.

Positive punishment:

In this type of punishment you withdraw a reward from the person. An example of positive punishment is if you don’t complete your homework your mother does not allow you to play football.

Negative punishment:

In this, you punish the person to do something that is not his favorite. The word “negative” seems very meaningless, as punishments are often negative outcomes that are the result of some specific action by nature. For example, if I don’t wash my plate after my meal I have to wash the plates of all the family members.

Negative punishments are highly effective, but when it comes to finding the success rate of the method, there are two certain factors to consider.

  • It should be followed by a reaction immediately.
  • This must be consistently applied.

This technique refers to the association of something bad with the behavior we want to change. Aversion therapy is a form of behavioral therapy requiring frequent combination with pain and inappropriate actions. For example, if you want to quit smoking think of vomits taste while smoking. Therefore, the association of a bad stimulus will diminish the undesirable behavior.

Some techniques that you can use for the aversion treatment are:

  • Another form of physical impact, like the snapping of a rubber band
  • An uncomfortable taste or scent
  • Negative imagery (sometimes by visual representation)
  • Shame
