In recent years we have seen a decline in the health of the students which is because of the change in the eating habits of students. 
Factors that have contributed to the change in eating habits of students are  :

  • Canteens/ cafes in school and colleges
  • restaurants near the educational institutes
  • Stress
  • Eating disorders

Let’s discuss all of them in detail.

Poor quality of food being provided in the canteens and cafes of the educational institutes. The food is selected on the base of taste, convenience, price, and not on the base of their nutritional values. The availability of fast food is made much easier for students. They do not have to put effort into carrying a lunch box in their bag. As it is easy for mothers as well  not to prepare lunch. The student just pays some price for the
food without even thinking about the nutritional content and the quality of the food. But indirectly they are paying the price of the decline of their health. As a famous saying says: ” you are what you eat




The opening of restaurants has made the availability of fast food much easy for the students. Hence every other day students want to visit restaurants and buy the poor quality of fast food, which they think, tastes better than the food made at home. According to psychology if you want to change the behavior of a child from using something a very powerful and effective technique is the restrictive intake method. i.e.
Making the availability of the product difficult for them in order to inhibit them from using it.



Stress is termed to be the general body response to internal or external
pressure in order to maintain homeostasis. Stress has played a key role in recent years for changing the eating habits of the students. Studies have proved the higher the amount of stress the more student is prone to emotional eating. Which results in the consumption of high calorie and fatty foods. The stress has results to change the eating habits of students they have started to eat food, which is having high levels of sugar like soft drinks and bakery items. The major reason for the stress in students is the overload of assignments, quizzes, and projects. In some students, the stress has generated a loss of appetite, which resulted in skipping meals hence losing their weight drastically causing numerous health problems.



Eating disorders in another major cause of change in the eating habits of students. Because of taking too much stress the students who started emotional eating gain a lot of weight and then it is a high risk for them to be prone to psychological disorders i.e,

  • Anorexia nervosa
  • Bulimia nervosa
  • Binge eating disorder
  • Pica
  • Rumination disorder
  • Restrictive food intake disorder

So, these were 4 major causes of change in the eating habits of students.
